Join us on May 10th for a special screening of SECRET MALL APARTMENT followed by a Q&A with the film's own mall-apartment-pioneer Michael Townsend. In 2003, eight Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived in it for four years, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even constructed a wall, smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants – a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification, a clubhouse to coordinate artistic charity, and finally, a 750 square foot "F you" to The Man. From Jeremy Workman, whose "Lily Topples The World" won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW 2021 and from Executive Producer Jesse Eisenberg.

The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Site will be screening at the FINE ARTS THEATER, on August 13th, 2025, marking its North Carolina premiere for a film with ties to the WNC independent film scene. The Los Angeles based production company, Entelekey Media partnered with Asheville based filmmaker Daniel Judson’s  Cinema Foundry. and Joseph Nilo’s HiLo Media. The film opens theatrically on August 8th as well as streaming on demand, but this special screening is to celebrate the contributions of the Asheville film community and will also be open to the public.

Directed by Jason Eric Perlman and starring Jake McLaughlin (Will Trent), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy, The Penguin), and Arielle Kebbel (Vampire Diaries), Site is about Neil Bardo (McLaughlin), a commercial real estate inspector and committed family man who, after discovering an abandoned government test site, is confronted by nightmarish visions that now begin infiltrating his waking life. After one of these visions, he accidentally injures his only son. To keep his marriage to Elena (Kebbel) intact while facing crushing medical costs, Neil begs for additional shifts from his mercenary boss, Garrison (Rossi). Desperate for answers, Neil enlists the help of ex-girlfriend turned journalist Naomi (Ishikawa). And together they unravel the mystery of the covert government site and its soul-bending experiments.

Asheville holds a special connection to the film. Site was co-produced by Asheville resident Daniel Judson and crewed by many local filmmakers, artists, and technicians, bringing a strong regional spirit to a genre typically dominated by major studios. Other local artists included Joseph Nilo of HiLo Media and celebrated puppeteer Hobey Ford, who created special puppets for the film. The upcoming screening is not only a cinematic event but a celebration of Asheville’s independent film scene. “Having the Asheville community so deeply involved in Site is a testament to the filmmaking talent in Asheville and Western North Carolina,” said Judson. “We’re excited to bring it home.”

Boogie Nights, the second film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson, exploded suddenly onto the cultural landscape in the fall of 1997. Relatively unknown and a mere 26 years old, Anderson brought together a truly impressive and loaded cast - Burt Reynolds (in his only Oscar nominated role), Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, Mark Wahlberg, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, and Thomas Jane - to tell his operatic and vibrant story of the Adult Entertainment scene in late 1970s Los Angeles. It immediately was hailed as something special and netted three Oscar nominations (one for Anderson for Original Screenplay). A bold and new talent had arrived and began a path that's led to his tenth and most recent film One Battle After Another (screening at FAT 9/26, 7pm). Featuring a soundtrack so good (Eric Burden, The Emotions, Marvin Gaye, ELO, The Beach Boys) they released TWO separate soundtracks on CD, Boogie Nights truly lives and breathes as a piece of kinetic and energetic cinema.

We'll be screening it in a ONE TIME, ONE NIGHT only event Wednesday 9/17 at 7 pm. Our own employee Michael Wheeler will be providing an introduction to the film before showtime and after will be leading a discussion about the film, its director, and contextualize its legacy amongst his other works after the film.

A Life Reimagined: The George Masa Story, a new documentary from Emmy Award-winning director Paul Bonesteel. This inspiring film explores the life and legacy of early CMC pioneer George Masa (1885-1933), a Japanese-born photographer whose passion for the Southern Appalachian landscape helped encourage the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Appalachian Trail. Rich with access to hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage and unreleased music, Gary Hustwit’s forthcoming documentary Eno employs groundbreaking technology to accomplish something that’s never been done before: a feature film that’s never the same twice. Hustwit and creative technologist Brendan Dawes have developed bespoke generative software designed to sequence scenes and create transitions out of Hustwit’s original interviews with Eno, and Eno’s rich archive of hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage, and unreleased music. Each screening of Eno is unique, presenting different scenes, order, music, and meant to be experienced live. The generative and infinitely iterative quality of Eno poetically resonates with the artist's own creative practice, his methods of using technology to compose music, and his endless deep dive into the mercurial essence of creativity.

Hustwit’s collaboration with Eno first began in 2017, when Eno created an original score for Hustwit’s film Rams, about the German designer Dieter Rams. Says Hustwit, “Much of Brian’s career has been about enabling creativity in himself and others, through his role as a producer but also through his collaborations on projects like the Oblique Strategies cards or the music app Bloom. I think of Eno as an art film about creativity, with the output of Brian’s 50-year career as its raw material. What I’m trying to do is to create a cinematic experience that’s as innovative as Brian’s approach to music and art.”

Music for Mushrooms is a narrative documentary highlighting the personal journey of shamanistic musician and filmmaker East Forest (Krishna-Trevor Oswalt) – a collaborator of the late Ram Dass – whose bold experiments pair music with guided psychedelic experiences to create spaces of healing for a fractured world.
